ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the preparation of aminochroman of the general formula I Image where R is a lower alkyl group having 1 to 4 C atoms, is described. In this process, nitrochromanone of the general formula Image II is hydrogenated with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to produce a corresponding aminochromanone. The resulting aminochromanone is reduced using zirconium oxide/isopropanol to aminochromene and the latter is finally hydrogenated with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst to produce the final product, of the general formula I. Aminochroman is a useful intermediate in the preparation of hypolipidaemic pharmaceuticals.
