In the treatment of the sleep disorder called sleep apnea, air is delivered under slight pressure through the nose of the patient in order to maintain a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). In order to prevent air escaping out of the mouth and causing a loss of airway pressure, a stretchable head band is typically worn which passes under the chin. The tension in this band (called a chin strap) prevents the jaw from dropping open when the patient falls asleep and the jaw muscles relax. Air can, however, still escape through the lips resulting in a reduction in the airway pressure and a condition called 'dry mouth'. In this invention, a stretchable and ventilated mouth piece is secured to the sides of the chin strap which presses against the closed lips of the patient and prevents the escaping of air. This results in improved therapy and patient comfort.
