A mixing device is placed in a stream of material (36) for mixing constituents in the stream and includes a plurality of mixing elements (60) projecting transversely into the oncoming stream of material. Each mixing element has a cup-shaped upstream face for confronting the oncoming stream of material to effect enhanced mixing with lower shear. The mixing elements are arrayed in a field (62E) in lateral rows (64) spaced longitudinally along the stream of material, the longitudinal spacing between the lateral rows being such that the mixing elements of adjacent rows are interleaved.
