A method of and apparatus for cold forming toothed wheels designed as an one- piece machine article having an outer toothed rim, a central hub of improved mechanical properties, which toothed wheels can also contain an inner rim, are provided, whereby one or more series of teeth of predefined shape and number are cold formed in the outer cylindrical or conical surface of said outer rim. The cold forming process contains more steps: the initial one is clamping and rotating a circular piece of metal of predefined thickness and diameter on a rotational table, while one or more metal wave-forming circular tools, pressed axially into the upper surface of said piece of metal, are moving radially causing a transition of metal structure into more ductile structure always having a substantially thicker meal-wave form. When said metal wave reaches a circular die i.e. wave-cut tool that is fixed on the upper surface at the outer circular area of the rotational table, which wave-cut tool rotates along with the table, the metal wave-already in a form similar to the form of the predefined outer annular rim, is further pressed against a predefined number of cutting edges of said die i.e. wave-cut tool, and cut in a predefined number of cut-planes laid axially, forming a series of grooves, which forming continues as long as the predefined shapes of said grooves are formed, i.e. the pre-form of the toothed wheel is finished. Dining the next step of the cold-forming process, either a circular blank having said series of cut-in grooves, or the pre-form of the toothed wheel having an outer annular rim having said series of a predefined number of cut-in grooves, while being held clamped on a stationary table of a press-pulsating tooth-forming unit, is formed into a form of the toothed wheel, whereby a predefined number of tooth-forming tools having a precisely defined shape and position moving inwardly radially into said preformed grooves are impressed into said grooves by variable and pulsating high pressure that is supplied by an integral hydraulic- electro-mechanical unit, i.e. press-pulsating forming unit. After the forming process is finished, one or more series of predefined number of teeth are formed, which teeth have precisely formed flanks of an improved roughness of surface and of an increased strength of form.
