The invention concerns substituted 2-phenylpyridines of formula (I), in which: n = 0, 1; R1, R3 and R4 represent H, OH, SH, NO2, NH2, CN, COOH, CONH2, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy, alkoxy halide, alkyl amino, dialkyl amino, alkyl thio, alkyl thio halide, alkylamino carbonyl, dialkylamino carbonyl; R2 represents H, OH, SH, NO2, NH2, CN, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy halide, alkylthio, alkyl thio halide, alkyl sulphinyl, alkyl sulphinyl halide, alkylsulphonyl, alkyl sulphonyl halide; R5 represents H or CN, halogen; R6, R8 represent H or halogen; R7 represents H, OH, NO2, CN, CF3-SO2- O-, halogen, alkyl, alkyl halide, alkoxy, alkoxy halide; X represents oxygen or sulphur; R9, R10 represent H, alkyl; m = 1-4; R11 represents alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkyl halide, alkenyl, alkenyl halide, alkoxy carbonyl, alkoxycarbonyl alkyl, optionally substituted phenyl, thienyl, furanyl, tetrahydrofuranyl, pyrrolyl, oxazolyl, isoxazolyl, thiazolyl, isothiazolyl, pyridyl, or pyrimidyl, possible substituents being NO2, CN, halogen, alkyl or alkoxy; R12, R13 represent alkoxy, alkylthio or, together with the common C atom (a), (b), (c), (d) or (e); R14 represents H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkenyl halide, alkoxycarbonyl alkyl benzyl; Z represents an optionally substituted ethylene or trimethylene chain. The invention also concerns salts of these compounds and the use of the compounds and salts as herbicides and for drying out and defoliating plants.
