A method and apparatus for cleaning molds, particularly tire molds (16) using pellets of a frozen gas and a robotically controlled apparatus are disclosed. A heated mold (16) is conveyed into an insulated and sound-proof enclosure (34) where a robot arm with a nozzle (52) mounted on the robot arm directs frozen CO2 pellets against the mold surface to be cleaned. The mold (16) is rotated on a rotary table (40) to clean the entire mold surface. The mold (16) is then removed from the enclosure (34) on a conveyor (82). The preferred frozen gas is CO2 because it is non-abrasive to the tire mold surfaces and also cleans the microvents of the tire mold (16).

Cette invention se rapporte à un procédé et à un appareil de nettoyage de moules, et notamment de moules à pneus (16), utilisant des granules de gaz solidifié ainsi qu'à un dispositif robotique. Conformément à l'invention, on transporte un moule chauffé (16) vers l'intérieur d'une enceinte (34) isolée et insonorisée où un bras robotique doté d'une tuyère (52) dirige des granules de dioxyde de carbone solidifié contre la surface du moule à nettoyer. On fait tourner ledit moule (16) sur une table rotative (40) de façon à nettoyer l'ensemble de sa surface. Puis on retire le moule (16) de l'enceinte (34) au moyen d'un transporteur (82). Le dioxyde de carbone (CO¿2?) constitue le gaz solidifié préféré de l'invention car, n'étant pas abrasif, il n'use pas les surfaces du moule à pneus et il permet également de nettoyer les orifices d'aération microscopiques du moule à pneus (16).
