Data and message optimization in wireless communications are enabled by a wireless device (56) with a user application (64a) provisioned with an optimized data structure (68a) for storing information associated with a remote service (18a) that utilizes complex data structures (28) for conveying the information to devices that access the remote service. A proxy (40) maps complex service messages (80) to optimized wireless messages (84) in a format of the optimized data structure, and maps optimized wireless messages (72) to complex service messages (76). The proxy is located in a communications path (42,44) between the wireless device and the remote service.
