A drill string jar apparatus (10) has an elongated tool body (12) positionable within a drill string (20), which also includes a latch man- drel (50) movable within a bore (17) of the tool body (12) between a first neutral position and fired up or fired down positions; a substantially continuous channel (44) formed in the interior wall of the tool body, a shoulder portion (54) on the exterior wall of the latch mandrel body for latching into the channel (44) of the tool body (12) when the mandrel (50) is in the neutral position and slots (62) in the wall of the latch man- drel (50) for allowing the mandrel body (52) to flex inwardly sufficiently to disengage the shoulder portion (54) from the channel (44) in the tool body (12) and allow the latch mandrel (50) to move upward or downw- ard within the bore (17) of the tool body (12) depending upon the direc- tion of the force imparted on the mandrel (50) and make contact with the upper or lower end of the tool in order to dislodge a tool below the jar apparatus.
