A method of producing a strand board having an average density of between 450 and 550 Km/m3 by providing a first set of strands having a moisture content of between 25 and 45% based on the dry weight of said strands and a second set of strand having a moisture content of between 5 and 7% based on the dry weight of said strands and forming a lay-up having a core layer formed of strands from the second set of strands sandwiched between a pair of surfaces layers each formed from strands of the first set. The lay-up is then pressed between heated platens into a consolidated panel having an average density of between 450 and 550 Km/m3 by closing the platens to the thickness of said consolidated panel in less than 30 seconds and raising temperature the said core layer to 100°C in less than 35 seconds without increasing the core as pressure above 0.17MPa.

L'invention porte sur un procédé servant à fabriquer un panneau de grandes particules orientées ayant une densité moyenne comprise entre 450 et 550 kg/m¾ en fournissant un premier jeu de lamelles de bois dont le degré d'humidité est compris entre 25 et 45 %, basé sur le poids sec desdites lammelles, ainsi qu'un deuxième jeu de lamelles de bois dont le degré d'humidité est compris entre 5 et 7 %, basé sur le poids sec des lammelles en question. On forme ensuite un assemblage dont la couche centrale est formée de lamelles du deuxièmme groupe prises en sandwich entre deux couches superficielles toutes deux formées de lamelles du premier groupe. L'assemblage est alors comprimé entre des plaques chauffantes de façon à former un panneau consolidé d'une densité moyenne comprise entre 450 et 550 kg/m¾ en serrant les plaques, pendant moins de 30 secondes, pour obtenir l'épaisseur désirée de façon à porter la couche centrale à une température de 100 °C en moins de 35 secondes, sans porter la pression de l'âme à une valeur supérieure à 0,17 MPa.
