METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR ADJUSTING ELECTRODE ISOTHERMS WITHIN ELECTRO-SLAG REMELTING Abstract A method and apparatus for electro-slag remelting including a cooling medium directed towards the electrode surface adjacent its entry into the slag layer. The method of the steps of immersing one end of a consumable electrode into a slag layer within a mould cavity, resistance heating the slag layer by passing an electric current between the electrode and the base of the mold cavity, progressively melting the end of the electrode, and retarding the melting of the periphery of the electrode tip with respect to the center of the tip by directing a cooling stream onto the exposed surface of the consumable electrode. The apparatus comprises, means for directing a cooling medium onto the surface of the electrode adjacent its immersion into the slag layer for retarding the melting of the periphery of the electrode tip with respect to the center of the tip, wherein the resulting flow of molten metal from the elec- trode tip into the mould is substantially from the elec- trode center toward the tip periphery.
