An improved method for the safe transportation and handling of hydrogen fluoride from a point of origin to a desired destination. The method involves adding, at the point of origin, a sulfone, having the general formula R-SO2-R' wherein R and R' are monovalent hydrocarbon alkyl or aryl substituents containing from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, to hydrogen fluoride to form a mixture containing an amount of water of no more than 30 weight percent of the total weight of the hydrogen fluoride in the mixture. The mixture also includes a weight ratio of sulfone to hydrogen fluoride in the range of from 1:100 to 100:1. The mixture is then transported to the desired destination. At the desired destination, the mixture is separated into a sulfone phase, comprising sulfone and containing less than 20 weight percent hydrogen fluoride based on the total weight of the sulfone phase, and a hydrogen fluoride phase comprising hydrogen fluoride and containing a weight ratio of sulfone to hydrogen fluoride of less than 2:100. The sulfone phase is then returned to the point of origin to reuse as sulfone.
