A method for "in-situ" modernization of a heterogeneous exothermic synthesis reactor, comprising the step of arranging at least a first catalytic bed in an upper portion of the reactor, is distinguished by the fact of further providing a plurality of catalytic beds arranged in a lower portion of the reactor in parallel with one another, and by the fact of loading said catalytic beds in the lower portion of the reactor with a catalyst having a greater activity than that of the catalyst loaded into the first catalytic bed. Thanks to the above steps, the present method allows obtaining a reactor having a high conversion yield and production capacity.
