A method and system are disclosed for providing continuous, interactive communication among devices on an electronic network (110). A permanent, dedicated symmetric connection is provided between a server application and a client device (164). Both client and server can therefore communicate bi- directionally. Message storage is provided for allowing messages to be stored (166, 178) while the client is offline or otherwise unavailable. The method and system is operable with any addressable device (164, 174, 174) on the electronic network. The invention can be used as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, prior art electronic network communication methods. The invention implements an advanced message routing system. A set of base capabilities are built on top of the message routing system. The communication method and system according to the present invention use a graphical user interface to virtually represent the applications that are used to interact with the electronic network. These graphical representations (276) are used to facilitate the transmission and receipt of messages across the electronic network. Applications according to the present invention are grouped into different levels according to their increasing levels of power and specificity. An interface (384, 472) is also provided to iconically represent the underlying interactive connections of the communication system. The present invention provides a one-to-one connection for bi-directionally publishing and receiving messages and a one-to-many connection. This interface enables applications to interact and deliver any type of focused functionality.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un système permettant d'assurer une communication interactive continue entre dispositifs situés dans un réseau électronique (110). Une connexion symétrique permanente spécialisée est assurée entre une application serveur et un dispositif client (164). Le client et le serveur peuvent ainsi tous deux communiquer de manière bidirectionnelle. On assure le stockage des messages en permettant auxdits messages d'être stockés (166, 178) pendant que le client est non connecté ou indisponible. Ce procédé et ce système fonctionnent avec tout dispositif adressable (164, 174, 174) du réseau électronique. L'invention peut également s'utiliser comme alternative, ou associée à des procédés de communication par réseau électronique déjà connus. L'invention met en oeuvre un système avancé d'acheminement des messages, un ensemble de capacités de base étant superposé audit système d'acheminement. Le procédé et le système de communication de l'invention mettent en oeuvre une interface graphique utilisateur afin de représenter virtuellement les applications utilisées pour interagir avec le réseau électronique. On utilise ces représentations graphiques (276) afin de simplifier la transmission et la réception des messages via le réseau électronique. Les applications de la présente invention sont groupées en différents niveaux en fonction de leurs niveaux croissants de puissance et de spécificité. Une interface (384, 472) permet également de représenter, au moyen d'icônes, les connexions interactives sous-jacentes du système de communication. La présente invention concerne en outre une connexion un à un servant à l'édition et à la réception bidirectionnelles des messages, ainsi qu'une connexion un à plusieurs. Cette interface permet aux applications d'interagir et de fournir toute sorte de fonctionnalité spécifique.
