This invention is an exercise apparatus (12) that includes a compact curved base member (20), which generally conforms to the shape of the back of the user, and a set of transverse rollers (82, 104) which are adapted to enable the base member (20) to roll upwardly and downwardly over a wall or other such surface. The base member (20) is also curved transversely to distribute pressure uniformly over a large area of the back to help reduce discomfort to the wearer. The pair of spaced apart transverse rollers (82, 104) distribute pressure across a large area of a wall uniformly, and each include an extruded thermoplastic member to help make the apparatus (12) relatively inexpensive to manufacture and light in weight. A guard (74) disposed at a top portion (21) of the base member (20) helps prevent the clothing of the user form inadvertently becoming entangled in the rollers (82, 104) during use.
