Straps, belts and harnesses have been instrumental in assisting people in all areas of life since early times. Today, these areas can be categorized into the following general areas. With animals, strap devices such as neck collars or body harnesses for harnessing domestic dogs and cats, are used. In the case of livestock such as horses, goats and sheep, strap devices such as head halters are commonly used. With wild animals strap devices for attaching tracking equipment or banding codes are used. With people, strap devices such as belts and harnesses are used to secure clothing and equipment to the body of the person. This equipment can range from knapsacks to jogging pouches to scuba diving pressurised air tanks to parachutes. In addition strap devices are commonly used to secure separate pieces of equipment to other pieces of equipment, from plastic instruction pouches secured to utility poles to fire or medical emergency equipment strapped to places in buildings or vehicles. Currently all these strap devices are made of leather or woven materials such as nylon. Incorporated into the device are buckles, rings, hooks and Velcro. These are used for fastening the ends of the device together or to other devices and for changing the device's size, and for attaching leashes or leads or identification labels and tags. In addition to using straps for purposes of securing articles, straps are used for visibility and identification. Pet and livestock owners desire to make their animals visible to motorists at night. Joggers, emergency workers, and others working outside at night desire to make themselves visible. Safety equipment, emergency equipment and other equipment needed at night also needs to be made sufficiently visible.
