The present invention relates to a naturally obtained mixture of higher molecular weight primary aliphatic alcohols which contain 24 to 34 carbon atoms. This invention also relates to the process for obtaining the alcohol mixture by extraction and purification with organic solvents from beeswax without saponification of the beeswax. The alcohol mixture obtained from beeswax has enhanced purity and contains a mixture of alcohols having 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 32 and 34 carbonatoms. The alcohol mixture is useful in pharmaceutical compositions, foodstuffs and dietary supplements and is effective for lowering cholesterol in LDL-C levels so that it is effective in treating hypercholesterolemia. Consequently the composition may be used to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, the atherosclerotic process (platelet hyperaggregability, ischemia and thrombosis) and also acts as an anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombotic agent. The composition also possesses neurotrophic properties and is useful for improving male sexual activity.
La présente invention porte sur un mélange d'origine naturelle d'alcools aliphatiques de poids moléculaire élevé qui contiennent de 24 à 34 atomes de carbone. Cette invention porte également sur un procédé visant à obtenir le mélange d'alcools par extraction et purification avec des solvants organiques à partir de cire d'abeille sans saponification de cette dernière. Le mélange d'alcools obtenu à partir de cire d'abeille présente une plus grande pureté et contient un mélange d'alcools possédant 24, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 32 et 34 atomes de carbone. Le mélange d'alcools est utile dans des compositions pharmaceutiques, des produits alimentaires et des compléments alimentaires et est efficace pour faire baisser le taux de cholestérol à des niveaux LDL-C de façon à pouvoir traiter efficacement l'hypercholestérolémie. Cette composition peut donc être utilisée pour réduire les risques de maladie coronarienne, le processus d'athérosclérose (hyperagrégation plaquettaire, ischémie et thrombose) et agit également comme agent anti-inflammatoire et antithrombotique. Cette composition possède également des propriétés neurotrophiques et est utile pour accroître l'activité sexuelle masculine.
