It has been found that the use of at least one unsupported metallocene polymerization catalyst with at least one supported metallocene polymerization catalyst in the polymerization of olefins allows for better control of the polymerization, especially gas phase polymerization. Such a system takes advantage of the high activity of the unsupported catalyst and the stability of a supported catalyst. Additionally, the relative timing of the addition of the supported and unsupported catalysts to a reaction system can be used to control a continuous polymerization reaction by stabilizing the reactor bed with the supported catalyst prior to addition of the unsupported catalyst.

On a découvert que dans la polymérisation d'oléfines, le fait d'utiliser au moins un catalyseur de polymérisation à base de métallocène non supporté avec au moins un catalyseur de polymérisation à base de métallocène supporté, permet de mieux réguler la polymérisation, notamment la polymérisation en phase gazeuse. Un tel système tire parti de l'activité élevée du catalyseur non supporté et de la stabilité du catalyseur supporté. En outre, on peut utiliser la cadence relative de l'ajout des catalyseurs supportés et non supportés, à un système de réaction, afin de réguler une réaction de polymérisation en continu, par stabilisation du lit du réacteur avec le catalyseur supporté, préalablement à l'ajout du catalyseur non supporté.
