Process for the modification of a polymer or copolymer having the following general structure for one or more of the repeating units: (1) wherein n is an integer, m is an integer in the range 0 to 6, and R is selected from hydrogen, substituted or unsubstituted C1-C20 alkyl, C3-C20 cycloalkyl, C6-C20 aryl, C7-C20 aralkyl, and C7-C20 alkaryl, which groups may include linear or branched alkyl moieties; the optional one or more substituents being selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, alkoxy, linear or branched alk(en)yl, aryloxy, halogen, carboxylic acid, ester, carboxy, nitrile, and amido groups, which process involves contacting the polymer or copolymer with a cyclic organic peroxide under conditions whereby at least some of said peroxide is decomposed. This process results in a (co)polymer with a high degree of branching but free of gel formation.

L'invention concerne un procédé de modification d'un polymère ou d'un copolymère dont un ou plusieurs motifs répétés répondent à la structure générale (1), dans laquelle : n est un entier, m est un entier allant de 0 à 6 et R est l'hydrogène ou un groupe alkyle en C1 en C20 substitué ou non substitué, cycloalkyle en C3 à C20, aryle en C6 à C20, aralkyle en C7 à C20 ou alkaryle en C7 à C20, ces groupes pouvant inclure des fragments alkyle linéaires ou ramifiés et le ou les éventuels substituants étant choisis parmi le groupe comprenant des substituants hydroxy, alkoxy, alkyle ou alcényle linéaire ou ramifié, aryloxy, halogéno, acide carboxylique, ester, carboxy, nitrile et amido. Ledit procédé implique de mettre en contact le polymère ou copolymère avec un peroxyde organique cyclique sous des conditions dans lesquelles une partie au moins dudit peroxyde est décomposée. Le procédé permet d'obtenir, sans formation de gel, un (co)polymère à degré de ramification élevé.
