The binding according to this invention releasably retains a boot to a ski, providing transverse shock compensation and offers a considerable amount of lateral shock absorbtion capacity. The ski boot is retained to the ski, below the boot sole and near the inertial balance point of the boot. The binding requires a minimum amount of moving parts, which form a part of the safety release mechanism as well as forming part of normal boot-entry, boot-exit mechanism. The binding requires a boot sole attached plate or plate portion integral with the boot. In its preferred embodiment, the binding forms an integral part of a binding support.
