A method and apparatus (10) for thermally killing weeds and other unwanted vegetation from areas where their presence is undesirable. The method and apparatus (10) are especially useful for killing weeds located adjacent auto or rail roadways or airport runways. The method of killing weeds involves first spraying the weeds with an amount of water sufficient to cover a substantial portion of the exposed outer parts of the weeds, and then subjecting the water covered weeds to an elevated temperature sufficient for the time of exposure to kill them. The apparatus (10) for thermally killing weeds by this method includes a water sprayer unit (50) and a heater enclosure or box (20), the water sprayer unit (50) being located in front of the heater box (20). The heater box (20) has burners (44) located at the forward end thereof that impact a heatable element (32) capable of generating infra-red radiation. A porous apron (23) extends between the bottom (22) of the heater box (20) and the ground to allow exhausting of combustion products and water vapor.
L'invention concerne un procédé et un dispositif (10) destinés à éliminer thermiquement les mauvaises herbes et autres herbes non désirées dans des zones où leur présence n'est pas souhaitée. Ce procédé et ce dispositif (10) sont particulièrement utiles afin d'éliminer les mauvaises herbes situées le long de routes, de voies ferrées ou de pistes d'aéroport. Le procédé d'élimination de mauvaises herbes consiste d'abord à vaporiser une quantité d'eau suffisante à couvrir une part importante des parties extérieures exposées des mauvaises herbes, puis à soumettre ces mauvaises herbes mouillées à une température suffisamment élevée pour les détruire pendant le temps d'exposition. Le dispositif (10) permettant d'éliminer thermiquement des mauvaises herbes selon ce procédé comprend une unité (50) de vaporisation d'eau et une enceinte ou boite de chauffage (20), l'unité (50) de vaporisation étant située en face de la boite de chauffage (20). Cette boite de chauffage (20) comporte des brûleurs (44) situés à son extrémité antérieure qui agissent sur un élément chauffable (32) pouvant générer un rayonnement infrarouge. Un rideau poreux (23) s'étend depuis la base (22) du chauffage (20) jusqu'au sol pour permettre l'échappement des produits de combustion et de la vapeur d'eau.
