An exhaust brake has a pressure release device. For example, where the exhaust brake includes a butterfly valve, the pressure release device includes an aperture in the valve member which, when open, allows exhaust gases to flow through the valve member of the butterfly valve. There is an aperture plate sized to close the aperture when pressed against the valve member
