According to the present invention a process for recovering one or more platinum group metals (PGMs) from a source of one or more PGMs comprises the steps of (i) providing a particulated starting material in the form of a source of one or more PGMs, which source also includes non-PGM material; (ii) subjecting the starting material to mechanical separation to remove non-PGM material to provide an upgraded PGM material; (iii) subjecting the upgraded PGM material of step (ii) to leaching with a solution containing a source of chloride to form a solution of chloro complexes of one or more PGMs; and (iv) extraction of one or more PGMs from the solution of step (iii).
