Immersive wide field of view displays are disclosed, for example, in the context of a virtual reality environment. At least two different sets of images are presented for a corresponding number of groups of viewers. In one aspect of the invention, each group has its own projection screen and projector and the viewers and screens are located in close proximity to one another for allowing interaction between the groups, but with the viewing screen for each group outside the field of view of the viewers of the other group. In another aspect of the invention, two different sets of stereoscopic images are projected onto the same screen that is viewed by two groups of viewers. Separation of the respective sets of images and of the left and right eye images within each set are achieved using either an alternate eye technique or a polarizer image separation technique. Time-multiplexing of images coupled with corresponding shuttering of viewers' eyes is also disclosed for achieving presentation of separate images to different groups of viewers.
La présente invention décrit une projection d'images à grand champ, dite "immersive", dans un environnement de réalité virtuelle, par exemple. Au moins deux ensembles différents d'images sont présentés à un nombre correspondant de groupes de spectateurs. Un premier aspect de l'invention montre que chaque groupe dispose de son propre écran de projection et de son propre projecteur, les spectateurs et les écrans étant situés à proximité les uns des autres afin de permettre une interaction entre les groupes et les écrans de chaque groupe se trouvant hors de la vue des spectateurs de l'autre groupe. Un second aspect de l'invention décrit deux ensembles différents d'images stéréoscopiques projetés sur le même écran vu par deux groupes de spectateurs. La séparation des ensembles respectifs d'images et des images vues par l'oeil droit et par l'oeil gauche dans chaque ensemble est réalisée au moyen d'une technique oculaire alternée ou d'une technique de séparation d'image par polarisation. L'invention décrit également un procédé de multiplexage temporel d'images associé aux battements de paupières des spectateurs afin de réaliser une présentation d'images séparées à différents groupes de spectateurs.
