Chlorine dioxide is obtained by reduction of a chlorate in a strong acid. The reduction takes place in an evaporator-crystallizer (4) under conditions able to produce a gas flow containing chlorine dioxide as well as a flow of the salt of the strong acid in the crystal state, as a byproduct. The flow of crystallized salt formed in the evaporator-crystallizer is made to fall into an elutriation tank (3) where it is washed with a saturated saline solution that feeds the evaporator-crystallizer by flowing back into the elutriation tank.

Le bioxyde de chlore est obtenu par réduction d'un chlorate dans un acide fort, ladite réduction étant conduite dans un réacteur évaporateur-cristallisoir (4), dans des conditions capables de conduire à un flux gazeux contenant le bioxyde de chlore recherché et un flux de sel dudit acide fort à l'état cristallisé, obtenu comme sous-produit. Selon l'invention, on amène le flux de sel cristallisé formé dans le réacteur évaporateur-cristallisoir, à tomber dans une jambe d'élutriation (3) dans laquelle il est lavé par une solution saline saturée alimentant ledit réacteur évaporateur-cristallisoir (4) par remontée à contre-courant dans ladite jambe d'élutriation (3).
