The apparatus provides for the determination of the instantaneous phase in the respiratory cycle, subject's average respiration rate and the provision of ventilatory assistance. A microprocessor receives an airflow signal from a pressure transducer coupled to a port at a mask. The microprocessor controls a servo that in turn controls the fan motor and thus the pressure of air delivered by the blower. The blower is coupled to a subject's mask by a conduit. The invention seeks to address the following goals: while the subject is awake and making substantial efforts the delivered assistance should be closely matched in phase with the subject's efforts; the machine should automatically adjust the degree of assistance to maintain at least a specified minimum ventilation without relying on the integrity of the subject's chemoreflexes; and it should continue to work correctly in the presence of large leaks.
L'appareil permet de déterminer la phase instantanée du cycle respiratoire, le volume moyen d'air inspiré par le patient et fournit une aide respiratoire. Un microprocesseur reçoit un signal d'écoulement d'air d'un transducteur de pression qui est fixé à un orifice d'un masque. Le microprocesseur commande un mécanisme asservi qui à son tour commande la soufflante et donc la pression de l'air envoyé à la soufflante. La soufflante est couplée au masque du patient par un conduit. L'invention vise les objectifs suivants : lorsque le patient est éveillé et fait des efforts importants, l'aide apportée devrait correspondre étroitement avec les efforts du patient; la machine devrait régler automatiquement le degré d'assistance pour maintenir au moins la ventilation minimale prescrite sans qu'on ait à se fier à l'intégrité des chimioréflexes du patient et devrait continuer à fonctionner correctement en présence de fuites importantes.
