ABSTRACT Novel and useful silylenol intermediates useful for preparing penem and carbapenem antibacterials are disclosed. Such silyenol intermediates are of the formula: Image (III) wherein J is -SiR1R2R3; R1, R2 and R3 independently represent lower alkyl or phenyl, T is hydrogen, or a blocking group T', wherein T' is phenyl; phenyl substituted with loweralkyl, alkoxy or halogen; phenylalkyl; -CR5R6R7 wherein R5 and R6 independently represent hydrogen or loweralkyl, and R7 represents phenyl, phenyl substituted with loweralkyl, alkoxy or halogen, phenylalXyl, alkoxy, phenoxy, phenoxy substituted with loweralkyl, alkoxy or halogen, or -CR8=CR9R10 wherein R8, R9 and R10 independently represent hydrogen or loweralkyl; and Ar is phenyl or phenyl substituted with nitro (-NO2), lower alkyl, alkoxy, or halo.
