Methods and apparatus for transmitting data over a wireless mesh network include generating a first mesh header having a plurality of fields, and extending the first mesh header by prepending a protocol header to generate a second mesh head-er. The second mesh header may be inserted into a protocol data unit for transmitting the protocol data unit via the mesh network.
