The present invention is directed to an autocrine growth factor. In particular, it relates to the production, purification and uses of stem cell proliferation factor (SCPF). In various cell lines, the protein of the invention exists in two forms, a soluble form and a membrane bound form which is detectable on the surface of a small percentage of human bone marrow cells and stimulates the proliferation of these cells. Therefore, SCPF may have a wide range of applications including but not limited to augmenting the growth of hematopoietic stem cells. Further, removal of the protein by an antibody may be useful in controlling tumor cell growth.

L'invention concerne un facteur de croissance autocrine. En particulier, elle traite de la production, de la purification et de l'utilisation d'un facteur de prolifération de cellules souches (SCPF). La protéine selon la présente invention existe dans diverses lignées cellulaires sous deux formes, à savoir une forme soluble et une forme liée à la membrane, qui peut être détectée à la surface d'un faible pourcentage de cellules de la moelle osseuse de l'homme, et qui stimule la prolifération de ces cellules. Par conséquent, ce facteur de prolifération peut avoir un grand nombre d'applications, comme l'augmentation de la croissance des cellules souches hématopoïétiques, mais il ne se limite pas pour autant à cette dernière application. En outre, le retrait de la protéine par un anticorps peut être utile pour contrôler la croissance des cellules tumorales.
