The specification discloses a method for containing spills on shelving and the like, and the resulting support mem-bers made in accordance with the method, by providing the generally flat top surface of a support with a hydrophobic surface which is arranged in a spill containment pattern and which is generally in the plane of the top surface of the support. The majority of the top surface of the support consists of one or more spill containment areas which are of a non- hydrophobic nature and which are bounded by the hydrophobic surfaces, such that spills on the shelving collect in the non-hydrophobic spill containment area or areas and are prevented from spreading by the hydrophobic surfaces.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de retenir un liquide s'étant déversé sur un rayonnage et analogue ainsi que les éléments de support réalisés selon le procédé, ledit procédé consistant à doter d'une surface hydrophobe la surface supérieure généralement plate d'un support, laquelle surface hydrophobe est appliquée selon une configuration permettant la retenue du liquide déversé et s'étend généralement dans le plan de la surface supérieure du support. La majeure partie de la surface supérieure du support est composée d'une ou de plusieurs zones de retenue de liquide non hydrophobes et reliées par les surfaces hydrophobes, de sorte que le liquide s'étant déversé sur le rayonnage s'accumule dans la ou les zones de retenue de liquide non hydrophobes et les surfaces hydrophobes empêchent le liquide de se répandre.
