A system (10) for detecting the position of a catheter (30) in a patient includes three sets of reference electrodes (20), with one set disposed on each of the mutually orthogonal (X, Y, Z) axes. A signal processor (14) measures the differential voltage indicative of impedance between a detection electrode (38) disposed on the catheter (30), and each electrode of each of the three sets of reference electrodes (20) in order to determine the X coordinate, Y coordinate, and Z coordinate of the catheter (30). The detected position of the catheter (30) is recorded, and the detection of subsequent catheter positions is performed relative to the recorded catheter position. The difference between subsequent catheter positions and the recorded position relative to the X, Y, Z axes is displayed in order to facilitate re- positioning of the catheter (30) at the recorded position. Optional EKG and/or respiratory sensors may be used to synchronize the catheter position detection in order to reduce detection inaccuracies due to EKG and/or respiratory artifacts.

L'invention concerne un système (10) permettant de détecter la position d'un cathéter (30) chez un patient, qui comprend trois groupes d'électrodes de référence (20), chaque groupe étant disposé sur l'un des axes mutuellement perpendiculaires (X, Y, Z). Un processeur de signaux (14) mesure la tension différentielle qui indique l'impédance entre une électrode de détection (38) placée sur le cathéter (30) et chaque électrode de chaque groupe d'électrodes de référence (20), afin de déterminer la coordonnée X, la coordonnée Y et la coordonnée Z dudit cathéter (30). La position détectée du cathéter (30) est enregistrée, et la détection de ses positions successives se fait par rapport à la position enregistrée. La différence entre les positions successives et la position enregistrée par rapport aux axes X, Y et Z s'affiche, afin de faciliter le repositionnement du cathéter (30) au niveau de la position enregistrée. Des capteurs ECG et/ou respiratoires peuvent être utilisés pour synchroniser la détection de la position du cathéter, ce qui diminue les imprécisions de détection dues aux artefacts de l'ECG et/ou aux artefacts respiratoires.
