A retractable syringe in which the forward end (70) of the plunger (14) as it reaches its fully depressed position actively deforms and releases a snap lock mechanism (50, 58) securing a mount (16) for the syringe needle at the forward end of the syringe barrel (20). The plunger (74) then captures and in an upward stroke withdraws the needle mount and an associated hypodermic needle into the barrel. In a preferred arrangement the needle capturing mechanism (54, 70) allows or biases the needle into a canted orientation with its tip (78) against the interior wall of the barrel. Alternatively an internal mechanism (102, 122) within the plunger propels the captured needle mount and needle into the body (103) of the plunger following release of the snap lock mechanism (50, 58) retaining the needle mount at the forward end of the barrel (20).
