A method of reducing bearing plate inventories for structural support posts. A first step involves providing a bearing plate for a structural support post which includes a planar metal body having a supporting face and an attachment face. A female coupling is symmetrically positioned on the attachment face of the planar metal body. The female coupling has an inner diameter adapted to receive a first size of male coupling from a structural support post. A second step involves providing a structural support column having a second size of male coupling which is too small for tight mating engagement with the inner diameter of the female coupling of the bearing plate. A third step involves securing at least one spacer member over the male coupling. The at least one spacer member increases the diameter of the second size of male coupling to be approximately equivalent to the dimensions of the first size of male coupling, such that the second size of male coupling with the at least one spacer is adapted for tight mating engagement with the inner diameter of the female coupling of the bearing plate.
