Bucillamine and N-2,2-dimethyl-3-mercaptopropionyl)-L-cysteine or related compounds can be used to prevent damage to living tissue from the formation or presence of reactive oxygen species. These reactive oxygen species are formed when tissue is first rendered hypoxic due to interruption of blood flow and then reoxygenated by restoration of blood flow. In particular, the invention is directed to the administration of bucillamine and N-2,2-dimethyl-3-mercaptopropionyl)-L- cysteine prior to or coincidental with reperfusion to prevent damage to myocardium from formation of reactive oxygen species. Also presented are applications of these compounds to similar ischemia-related cell injury in other organs.
De la bucillamine et de la N-2,2-diméthyl-3-mercaptopropionyl)-L-cystéine ou des composés apparentés peuvent être utilisés pour prévenir des lésions sur des tissus vivants dues à la formation ou à la présence d'espèces d'oxygène réactif. Ces espèces d'oxygène réactif se forment lorsque le tissu devient d'abord hypoxique du fait de l'interruption de l'écoulement sanguin, puis est réoxygéné par rétablissement de l'écoulement sanguin. Cette invention comprend notamment l'administration de bucillamine et N-2,2-diméthyl-3-mercaptopropionyl)-L-cystéine précédant ou coïncidant avec la reperfusion afin d'éviter des lésions du myocarde dues à la formation d'espèces d'oxygène réactif. L'invention concerne également l'application de ces composés sur des lésions cellulaires induites par l'ischémie dans d'autres organes.
