A system and method efficiently conveys Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) membership information across a bridged network. In particular, an intermediate network device, such as a bridge, includes a plurality of ports for interconnecting entities s of a computer network. For each port, a Generic Attribute Registration Protocol (GARP) participant is established that has a compact GARP VLAN Registration Protocol (GVRP) application component and a GARP Information Declaration (GID) component. The GID component operates a plurality of state machines to maintain registration state for all of the VLANs of which the port has been made aware. The compact- GVRP application component further includes an encoder/decoder unit that collapses VLAN registration information according to an encoding algorithm. The collapsed VLAN registration information is then loaded into a single compact-GVRP PDU message for transmission from the respective port. The encoder/decoder unit also recovers encoded VLAN registration from received compact-GVRP PDU messages for operating the state machines.
L'invention concerne un système et une méthode permettant de transférer efficacement des informations d'appartenance de réseaux locaux virtuels (VLAN) dans un réseau à pont. En particulier, l'invention concerne un dispositif de réseau intermédiaire, notamment un pont, comprenant une pluralité de ports pour des entités d'interconnexion d'un réseau informatique. Pour chaque port, un participant de protocole d'enregistrement d'attribut générique (GARP) est établi. Ce GARP présente un composant d'application de protocole d'enregistrement VLAN GARP (GVRP) et un composant de déclaration d'information GARP (GID). Ce composant GID fait fonctionner une pluralité d'automates d'états finis pour maintenir un état d'enregistrement pour tous les VLAN dont le port a pris connaissance. Le composant d'application GVRP compact comprend également une unité codeur/décodeur qui écrase les informations d'enregistrement VLAN selon un algorithme de codage. Les informations d'enregistrement VLAN écrasées sont ensuite chargées dans un message PDU GVRP compact unique pour une transmission à partir du port correspondant. L'unité codeur/décodeur permet également d'extraire un enregistrement VLAN codé à partir de messages PDU GVRP compacts reçus pour faire fonctionner les automates d'états finis.
