The present invention relates to a process useful in the preparation of compounds which are useful in treating diseases, such as TNF-.alpha., IL- 1.beta., IL-6 and/or IL-8 mediated diseases and other maladies. In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a process for preparing compounds of formula (I) comprising (a) mixing R11-CH2-C(O)L and R12-CN in a suitable solvent and in the presence of base; and (b) adding R4-N=C=X; or comprising (a) mixing R11-CH2-C(O)L and R12-CN in a suitable solvent and in the present of base; (b) adding R4-N=C=X; and (c) adding R2-L'; wherein L, L', X, R2, R4, R11 and R12 are defined in the claims.
