A method and apparatus for ophthalmological examination and diagnosis, and in particular a method and apparatus for stereoscopic imaging of an ocular fundus. Digital photographic images are taken of a patient's retina, stored electronically, and transmitted to a workstation computer for display. The workstation computer may be situated in close proximity or may be situated a considerable distance from the components that are used to produce the digital photographic images. Upon downloading of the digital photographic images to the workstation computer, a pair of images may be displayed on the display screen for viewing and analysis by a diagnostician using stereoscopic viewing means. A webserver with a master database, containing patient information and digital image files, may be associated with the workstation computer, thus enabling authorized users to view and analyze patient information and digital image files from a computer connected to the Internet.
