ABSTRACT A vehicle safety system includes a plurality of Infrared (IR) motion sensors which produce an output signal upon detection of a person within their range and a vehicle brake application arrangement for disablement of the vehicle upon receipt of the output signal. The system is activated by a vehicle door controlled switch. The vehicle door is maintained in the opened condition by a door locking arrangement to prevent deactivation of the system while a person is detected. The system further includes a timed switch which maintains the system activated for a preselected time interval after closing of the door. The system substantially prevents collisions due to driver error between the vehicle and persons discharged therefrom and is of simple construction.
