The present invention is a computer method and apparatus of point slicing in digital communication systems employing Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM). This method comprises the steps of providing an infinite lattice, receiving at least one subset of soft point, defining at least one valid constellation boundary, determining a closest valid constellation hard point for each soft point in the subsets of soft points, and reporting the closest valid constellation hard point.
