ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A data storage medium is disclosed in which binary data may be stored in and read from a three-dimensional structure composed of a plurality of stacked recording layers. Logical "1"s are stored as data cells located at predetermined data locations within each recording layer; whereas logical "0"s are recorded as the absence of data cells at the aforesaid data locations. Various methods are taught for reading, writing and erasing data stored in the data storage medium. Finally, an data recording and retrieval apparatus which uses the three-dimensional data storage medium of the invention is disclosed.
