The invention concerns a method for separating at least a benzothiophene compound from a hydrocarbon mixture, for instance gas oil, consisting in: (a) contacting said mixture or a fraction obtained therefrom, with a reagent comprising an acceptor complexing agent pi , to obtain a donor-acceptor complex between the acceptor complexing agent and said benzothiophene compound; (b) separating said complex from said mixture, or from said fraction, to obtain a fraction depleted or purified in said benzothiophene compound.
