A process is disclosed for the preparation of a 1,3-disubstituted imidazolium salt having the following formula: (see formula 1) comprising contacting an .alpha.-dicarbonyl compound of formula (see formula 2) an aldehyde of the formula R2CHO, one or more amines of the formula R1NH2, and an acid of the formula H n X. Each R1 is hydrocarbyl, or substituted hydrocarbyl; R4 and R5 are each independently hydrogen, hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl; X is an anion; and n is an integer corresponding to the number of anionic charges on X. The 1,3- disubstituted imidazolium salts are useful as synthetic intermediates, polymer precursors and pharmaceuticals.
