A composition suitable for safety removing hydrogen from gaseous mixtures containing hydrogen and oxygen, particularly those mixtures wherein the hydrogen concentration is within the explosive range. The composition comprises a hydrogenation catalyst, preferably Pd dispersed on carbon, wherein the concentration of Pd is from about 1-10 wt.%, dispersed in a polymeric material matrix. As well as serving as a matrix to contain the hydrogenation catalyst, the polymeric material, which is substantially unreactive to hydrogen, provides both a diffusion restriction to hydrogen and oxygen, thereby limiting the rate at which the reactants (hydrogen and oxygen) can diffuse to the catalyst surface and thus, the production of heat from the recombination reaction and as a heat sink.
L'invention se rapporte à une composition permettant de supprimer en toute sécurité l'hydrogène de mélanges gazeux contenant de l'hydrogène et de l'oxygène, notamment de mélanges où la concentration d'hydrogène se situe dans un domaine de déflagration. Ladite composition comporte un catalyseur d'hydrogénation, de préférence du palladium dispersé sur du carbone, dans lequel la concentration de palladium est comprise entre 1 et 10 % en poids, ladite composition étant dispersée sur une matrice de matière polymère. La matière polymère ne sert pas seulement de matrice de support du catalyseur d'hydrogénation mais, ne réagissant sensiblement pas avec l'hydrogène, elle assure la restriction de la diffusion de l'hydrogène et de l'oxygène, ce qui réduit le taux de diffusion des réactifs (hydrogène et oxygène) vers la surface du catalyseur et de ce fait limite la production de chaleur issue de la réaction de recombinaison. Ladite matière polymère joue par conséquent le rôle de dissipateur de chaleur.
