A coated transparency, and method for making it, is disclosed, the transparency having a multi-layer antireflection coating that provides high transmittance with low specular reflectance, yet that also provides reduced visibility of surface defects. The coating includes alternating layers of polymerized silicon dioxide and polymerized titanium dioxide on a transparent substrate, with at least one of the layers incorporating discrete particles having a refractive index different from that of surrounding polymer. This provides the coating with a diffuse reflectance that is comparable to, or larger than, its specular reflectance, yet that still is negligible when compared to the coating's transmittance. The diffuse reflectance creates a loss of contrast for any reflected image or glare, thus masking any surface defects and providing a comfortable visual appearance. The successive layers of the antireflection coating are deposited on the substrate by applying separate solutions of an alkoxide, and alcohol, and water, and by curing the layer at an elevated temperature before the next succeeding layer is applied.

Cette diapositive présente un revêtement antiréfléchissant multicouche lui conférant un facteur de transmission élevé et un facteur bas de réflexion spéculaire, tout en limitant la visibilité des défauts de surface. Ce revêtement comporte des couches alternées de dioxyde de silicium polymérisé et de dioxyde de titane polymérisé sur un substrat transparent, au moins une des couches incorporant des particules discrètes dont l'indice de réfraction est différent de celui du polymère environnant. Ceci confère au revêtement un facteur de réflexion diffuse comparable à son facteur de réflexion spéculaire, ou supérieur à ce dernier, mais cependant négligeable si on le compare à son facteur de transmission. Ce caractère diffus crée une perte de contraste pour toute image ou tout éclat réfléchis, ce qui masque tout défaut de surface et permet d'obtenir un aspect visuel confortable. On dépose les couches successives de ce revêtement antiréfléchissant sur le substrat en appliquant différentes solutions d'un alkoxyde, d'un alcool et d'eau, et en durcissant la couche à température élevée avant l'application de la couche suivante.
