An electrophoresis apparatus for measuring, characterizing and/or altering a composition of a sample. The apparatus comprises an anode compartment having an anode and a cathode compartment having a cathode. The anode and cathode are spaced at a distance from one another to define an electric field having a direction along a longitudinal axis, and between the anode and cathode compartments can be at least one separation compartment. Each compartment includes means for adding or removing a solution, a first dimension orthogonal to the direction of the electric field, a second dimension orthogonal to the electric field and the first dimension, and a third dimension parallel to the electric field and orthogonal to the first and second dimensions. A ratio of the first and second dimensions define an aspect ratio, at least one aspect ratio being less than one. An ion-permeable barrier is positioned between each compartment to prevent convective mixing therebetween. At least one of the compartments can be made of an electrically insulating material having a thermal conductivity greater than about 1 W/mK and a specific heat greater than about 100 J/kgK.
L'invention concerne un appareil d'électrophorèse permettant de mesurer, caractériser et/ou modifier la composition d'un échantillon. L'appareil comprend un compartiment d'anode possédant une anode et un compartiment de cathode comprenant une cathode. L'anode et la cathode sont espacées l'une de l'autre à une distance déterminée, de manière à définir un champ électrique ayant une direction le long d'un axe longitudinal et au moins un compartiment de séparation peut se trouver entre les compartiments d'anode et de cathode. Chaque compartiment comprend des moyens permettant d'ajouter ou de retirer une solution, une première dimension orthogonale par rapport à la direction du champ électrique, une deuxième dimension orthogonale par rapport au champ électrique et à la première dimension et une troisième dimension parallèle au champ électrique et orthogonale par rapport aux première et secondes dimensions. Un rapport des première et seconde dimensions définit un rapport d'aspect, au moins un rapport d'aspect étant inférieur à un. Une barrière perméable aux ions est positionnée entre chaque compartiment de manière à empêcher un mélange convectif entre ceux-ci. Au moins un des compartiments peut être conçu dans un matériau électriquement isolant possédant une conductivité thermique supérieure à environ 1 W/mK et une chaleur spécifique supérieure à environ 100 J/kgK.
