An improved method of learning character segments from received text enables facilitated text input on an improved handheld electronic device. In receiving text on the handheld electronic device, the characters of the text are converted into the inputs with which the characters correspond. Segments and other objects are analyzed to generate a proposed character interpretation of the inputs. If at least a portion of the character interpretation differs from a corresponding portion of the received text, a character learning string comprising the differing characters are stored as a candidate. In response to receiving additional text on the handheld electronic device, the characters of the additional text are converted into the inputs with which the characters correspond. Segments and other objects are then analyzed to generate another proposed character interpretation of the series of additional inputs. If at least a portion of the another character interpretation differs from a corresponding portion of the additional received text, another character learning string comprising the differing characters of the additional received text are compared with the candidate. If a set of characters in the another character learning string match characters in the candidate, the set of characters are stored as a segment.

L'invention concerne un procédé amélioré d'apprentissage de segments de caractères à partir d'un texte reçu, lequel procédé facilite l'entrée de texte sur un dispositif électronique de poche amélioré. Lorsqu'un texte est reçu sur le dispositif électronique de poche, les caractères du texte sont convertis en entrées auxquelles les caractères correspondent. Des segments et d'autres objets sont analysés pour permettre la génération d'une interprétation de caractères proposée des entrées. Si au moins une partie de l'interprétation de caractères diffère d'une partie correspondante du texte reçu, une chaîne d'apprentissage de caractères comprenant les caractères divergents est mémorisée comme candidate. Lorsqu'un texte supplémentaire est reçu sur le dispositif électronique de poche, les caractères du texte supplémentaire sont convertis en entrées auxquelles les caractères correspondent. Des segments et d'autres objets sont ensuite analysés pour permettre la génération d'une autre interprétation de caractères proposée de la série d'entrées supplémentaires. Si au moins une partie de l'autre interprétation de caractères diffère d'une partie correspondante du texte supplémentaire reçu, une autre chaîne d'apprentissage de caractères comprenant les caractères divergents du texte supplémentaire reçu est comparée à la chaîne candidate. Si un ensemble de caractères de l'autre chaîne d'apprentissage de caractères correspond à des caractères de la chaîne candidate, l'ensemble de caractères est mémorisé comme segment.
