Spools are often used as a means of compact and tangle-free storage for rope, wire, chain, belts or measuring tape; the item to be stored is wound onto the spool by hand, and this rotary hand motion causes fatigue and cannot be repeated for a very long time. In this invention, the spool is connected to a gear assembly that makes it possible to roll a given item onto the spool by pulling a cord in a continuous linear fashion, thereby eliminating the need for rotational wrist movement. This cord is connected to a spring which automatically returns it to its initial position, i.e., spooled around a small wheel which drives the storage spool, only when necessary.
