The invention relates to novel UVB/UVA-absorbing chromophores that are present in the natural products of a marine hydroid, and derivatives thereof, useful as sunscreening agents. Furthermore, the present invention relates to methods for protecting skin from the damaging effects of solar ultraviolet radiation. This method comprises topically applying to the skin an effective coating of a sunscreen composition of the present invention. Additional embodiments of the invention use these natural UV-absorbing compounds, or derivatives thereof, as additives as a means of providing UV-protective plastics, paints, and waxes.
Nouveaux chromophores absorbants les UVA et UVB, présents dans les produits naturels d'un hydroïde marin, et leurs dérivés, utiles comme agents de protection solaire. L'invention concerne en outre des méthodes de protection de la peau contre les effets dommageables du rayonnement ultraviolet solaire. Cette méthode consiste à appliquer sur la peau une couche efficace d'une composition du type décrit. Selon d'autres modes de réalisation de l'invention, ces composés naturels absorbant les UV sont utilisés comme additifs permettant d'obtenir des plastiques, des peintures et des cires protégeant contre les UV.
