A spread-spectrum matched filter apparatus includes a code generator (43), an in-phase programmable-matched filter (I-PMF) (35), a quadrature programmable- matched filter (Q-PMF) (37), an in-phase frame-matched filter (I-FMF) (38), a quadrature frame-matched filter (Q-FMF) (39) and a controller (46). The code generator (43) alternately generates replicas of pilot and data chip-sequence signals that are used to set the impulse responses of the I-PMF (35) and the Q- PMF (37), which are thus alternately set up to detect pilot or data spread- spectrum channels. The I-FMF (38) and the Q-FMF (39) detect a despread pilot bit sequence signal and generate a peak-pilot correlation signal used by the controller (46) to determine when to change the impulse responses of the PMFs (35, 37).
