Abstract of the Disclosure A collision avoidance system for program controlled punch presses which position the ram at a low "hover" height during work piece movement in which a switch is located to be tripped by inward movement of the workpiece gripper carriage to a degree in which a punch-gripper collision is possible, with the ram elevated to a safe height whenever the switch has been tripped.
