A continuous process is provided for producing sulphur dioxide and alpha calcium sulphate hemi-hydrate from calcium sulphite usually produced in a waste material from flue gas desulphurization consisting of treating the calcium sulphite directly to alpha calcium sulphate hemi-hydrate using a range of temperatures from 77°C to 125°C, a range of acidity of 10 percent to 35 percent sulphuric acid and a time of 5 to 120 minutes. The optimum results being achieved when the conditions utilize a temperature that is about 80°C, sulphuric acid content is about 35 percent, and time required is about 60 minutes.
